40 Days, 40 Habits You Should Break; Day #22: Living In A Bubble
Bad Habit #22: Frequenting The Same Places
Look. I’m all for being comfortable, but a lot of people are way too comfortable in the bubbles that they live in. I know too many people who are living and working in the same city/area they grew up in AND went to college in… ridiculous. What benefits could you possibly be reaping from not switching up the scenery and seeing/experiencing some new places? As someone who grew up in two different cities and then went to college in another, and now grad school in a fourth, I feel that this exposure to new people and ways of life has truly made me cultured in more ways that you’d think. I can go as far as to say that even for those of you who have been living in the same places all your life, I find that even when you vacation, you vacation in the same places yet again. It seems that when I lived in DC, the only place people would vacation to would be Miami. Ok, yea I love Miami too… I have been a hundred times and it’s one of my favorite places, but good lord… how can you feel comfortable repeatedly spending money on essentially the same vacation over and over again in the same year? What a waste. Do yourself a favor, switch it up a bit, broaden your horizons, see some new places, try some new things, burst out of your bubble. I understand that we all desire a certain level of comfort, but it’s easy to vacation in a new place that resembles Miami, yet gives you the benefit of some new culture. Stop being so afraid of change. I also suggest trying to find a job in a new market; always want to try out California? Go for it. What’s the worst thing that could happen? You have to move back to where you came from because you don’t like it in the new place. Ok. It’s really not as big of a deal as you think it is and, frankly, you would probably find that you’d be happier with the change of pace, even if it were unsuccessful, than you are dealing with the same ol same in your current location…especially when a majority of you frequent the same handful of restaurants and nightclubs in the current city you’re in. You ain’t foolin me…I know you’re bored and unsatisfied, so take control of your life and make some f*cking moves.
